Influence of Short-Period Heat Treatment on Mechanical Properties of NiTi Wires

The approximately equiatomic alloy of nickel and titanium, known as nitinol, possesses unique properties such as superelasticity, pseudoplasticity, shape memory, good corrosion resistance and sufficient biocompatibility. One of the final steps during fabrication of NiTi devices is heat treatment. This treatment leads to precipitation of nickel-rich phases which strongly influence mechanical properties of the material. In this work we studied the influence of the temperature of the short-period heat treatment on mechanical properties and fatigue life of the NiTi wires intended for manufacture of stents.
