Fractography of Steam Treated Sintered Steel Compacts

Steam treatment is a process to improve tribological and mechanical properties of ferrous compacts produced via powder metallurgy (PM) approach. In the present work, the effect of steam treatment on the mechanical behavior and fracture surface of a Fe base alloy was investigated. Samples were prepared in four levels of density from ABC100 Fe powder with 0.6% C. The microstructure of the compacts was also studied to observe the oxide penetration and pores morphology. Results showed that steam treatment by producing a magnetite layer on the surface and in the pore network has a substantial effect on mechanical properties and especially hardness.
